Supporting Men Who Feel Awful

This page could have been called “Feeling Bad.” Or even just “Boo!”

Sometimes that is the only honest way to say it.
Many people suffer for long periods without understanding why. They might have constant heaviness in the chest, irritability, blankness or numbness, and just think “that’s what life feels like.”

Sometimes we are truly oblivious to our own pain. At other times, we won’t face our pain because we believe that no solutions are possible. When we look into that part of ourselves, if we ever dare, all we see is a deep dark pit.

The lesson from Person-Centred Therapy (PCT) is that solutions are possible, and that you are the solution. Whatever is in that dark pit is there because you were meant to go and find it.

In therapy, diagnosis and treatment go together, because naming something in the mind is part of changing it. This is especially true when the client is the one uncovering their own problems.

The reason that PCT is so effective for such a wide range of people is because it is all about using the therapeutic frame to help people hear and understand themselves. This gives them power.

Your psychological healing will be the new perspectives and decisions that come naturally from dragging your pain into the light.

How therapy helps

Acknowledging our own suffering can be scary because now something needs to change. But this is the start of getting better.

Counsellors and psychologists broadly agree that the road to fulfilment and contentment is an inner road. The Hero’s Journey is real and difficult. We have to voyage inside, picking up and untangling the beliefs and memories that are clogging our system.

Young men especially are at a nexus of mixed messages and confused roles in our society. But help is available, no one was made for misery, and life does get better.
