Support For Men Feeling a Lack of Direction

Some of the men I work with seek out therapy because life feels empty or meaningless. This might sound like a philosophical problem, but what many men are really yearning for is a concrete goal that motivates them. That is what makes life feel exciting.

Lack of Direction can be a stealth problem, and many people don’t seek help because nothing obvious is wrong. They aren’t gaining weight or having disturbing thoughts; they are just drifting.

This kind of problem doesn’t have the same visible urgency as anxiety attacks or anger issues, but it can be very stressful.

Human beings are not built for constant uncertainty, and a lot of the happiness in our lives is derived from taking steps towards concrete goals. When we are uncertain or apathetic about our goals, we can't feel like we are achieving anything.

That’s why a lack of direction is so demoralising, but with patience and courage, we can turn those vague feelings of unease into specific self-knowledge.

Getting to know you

People who lack direction often have assumptions about the world and themselves that hold them back.

Often, we are only passengers in our own lives and witnesses to our behaviour. We watch ourselves eat junk food instead of going to the gym, and we watch ourselves pick up our phone instead of studying or looking for work. Our lives are passing us by, and we think there must be something wrong with us, that we are weak or lazy.

In many cases, the answer is much simpler. Where we see laziness, there is actually a deep frustration. We can’t move forward because we are not pointed at what we truly want. Only you can answer questions like that, but therapy is a space that measurably improves your odds of reaching that clarity.

Getting started

You don’t need a crisis to be ‘eligible’ for therapy; you don’t need to get a diagnosis from a doctor or have a breakdown. You are a human being (with all the hardship and frustration that involves!), and this alone makes you eligible and welcome in the therapy space.
